The primary function of any Fire Department is, as the name implies, firefighting and fire protection. The NMVFC proudly protects over 3,000 homes and several commercial buisnesess complexes as well thousands of acres of forest. We are equipped to handle any type of fire, be it structural, moto r vehicle, or even liquids in a tank such as propane and natural gas. Our water supply comes from on-board tanks, lakes & ponds, or buried water tanks throughout our response area. The NMVFC, like many other rural departments also relies the always willing help of neighboring departments for water supply and extra man power. Vis-Versa, we will respond to any of our neighboring departments to provide whatever assistance is needed. Some examples are water supply with our 3,000 gallon tanker, Rapid Intervention Teams for downed firefighter rescue, or simply covering their station while their personnel are busy with another incident. We frequently participate in drills with Madison Hose Co. #1 and our neighbors including Guilford, Durham, Killingworth, and Clinton. |

In addition to excellent fire protection services, we provide many other functions to the citizens of Madison. At motor vehicle accidents, we perform extrication with the Jaws of Life as well as mitigate hazards from fluid spills and provide care to the injured. We will often assist the Police Department with traffic control at accident scenes as well, allowing them to complete their investigation and not tie up other patrol units.

We also participate in activities aside from emergency responses. Our members go to the elementary schools to teach children about fire safety and what to do in an emergency. At the annual Shellfish Festival at the Surf Club, we have a Fire Safety trailer to teach children how to get out of a building when there is smoke and what to do when you get out. You can even practice dialing 9-1-1 and learn what to say when you call.
As you can see, the fire service has evolved significantly from the days of just putting out fires. We will always continue to expand our training and services to meet the needs of the citizens we protect. As our slogan goes, we are “Neighbors Helping Neighbors”.
