EMERGENCY MEDICAL
FIRST RESPONDER PROGRAM

The North Madison Vol. Fire Co. serves the citizens of Madison, but primarily the residents of North Madison with Emergency Medical Services. Madison is an irregularly shaped town, being 14 miles longs and only a few miles wide. The town’s ambulance is located close to the southern boundary of the town. Because of this unique geography, response by the ambulance to some areas of North Madison can take some time. Chief John Brady, (past Chief of North Madison), recognized this unique problem and pushed the fire company into developing a medical response program.

In 1997, Fire Fighters from the Fire Company took a Medical Response Technician (MRT) class and became certified in life savings skills such as CPR. Members of the Fire Company also learned how to use Defibrillators.

Today, there are a total of 22 members in the EMS program. These members have dual roles within the Fire Company. Many members are fire fighters as well. Members are certified to the level of MRT and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

The North Madison Vol. Fire Co. serves as the Supplemental First Responder to the Madison Police Department. The Police Department has officers trained to the MRT-D level. Each police officer carries a defibrillator, oxygen and a medical bag. The Ambulance service, Madison Ambulance Association, transports patients to various facilities in the area. These facilities include but are not limited to Middlesex Hospital, Middlesex Medical Center (Shoreline Clinic), Yale New Haven Hospital, and Saint Raphael’s.

The EMS Section of the Fire Company continues to thrive today. About half of all of the emergency incidents that the department responds to is EMS related. Calls range from Difficulty breathing to chest pain to Motor Vehicle Accidents.

The Fire Company is always looking for new members. If you are interested in volunteering your time and helping people, EMS in the Fire Service is a great way to get started. Check out the Membership section if you are interested!
